Many people have wrong notion that Territorial Army is a temporary force of Indian Army where people work simply as a volunteer.  Of coarse people do join Territorial Army by their own choice but many young civilians have opted it as a full time career. Let’s find out more..

The Territorial Army is a part of Regular Army and its present role is to relieve the Regular Army from static duties and assist civil administration in dealing with natural calamities and maintenance of essential services in situations where life of the communities is affected or the security of the Country is threatened and to provide units for Regular Army as and when required.

Presently the Territorial Army has a strength approx. 40000 persons comprising of Departmental TA units such as Railway, IOC, ONGC, and Non Departmental TA units of Infantry Battalion (TA) including Home & Hearth Battalions, Ecological Battalion (TA) affiliated to various Infantry Regiments and Engineer Regiment (TA) for maintenance of Line of Control Fencing. Men of the TA have taken part in various adventure activities, famous one being scaling of Mt Tengchen Khang (6010 mtr) in West Sikkim by Jt-Indo-British TA Mountaineering Expedition in May 1998. The officers and men of the Territorial Army have been decorated for their gallantry and distinguished services. So far they have earned 05 Ati Vishisht Seva Medal, 05 Vir Chakra, 04 Shourya Chakra, 01 Yudh Seva Medal, 72 Sena Medal, 26 Vishist Seva Medal, 16 Mention-in-Dispatches and 252 Chief of Army Staff Commendation Cards. Many Industrialists, politicians and eminent personalities have been members of the TA. The force also has had the honour of appointing 11 officers over the years as Hony ADC to the President of India.

 

About Service

All personnel of infantry and Departmental TA will be called out for service embodiment by the Central Government or the respective Headquarter of Territorial Army on the eve of National Emergency or for the Internal Security duties and training exercises. Territorial Army personnel are entitled to same benefits by the Government of India as in case of regular Army for training and service embodiment. Medals and Awards are as applicable to Regular Army. In addition Territorial Army Officers and JCOs are entitled to TA Decoration on completion of 20 years and 12 years of meritorious service respectively. Men between age of 18 to 42 years old can apply through both the entries i.e. Officer and Sepoy.

Military aspirant who are not eligible for CDSE, AFCAT, OTA, ACC, etc. can take Territorial Army as a next level of opportunity to serve this nation in uniform.
